Compressing Files
This whole process is a learning exercise, in every thing it takes to make an RPG, that includes book production, in this case exporting to a PDF. We're using SCRIBUS to build and generat our PDFs which is good, because its designed for printers in case we ever want to print out any of these files physically for ourselves, but it also is optimized for Printiners NOT Computer display, so the final PDFs were getting excessively large.
After noting what was basically a 4 page document was 85mgs we did some experimentation on finding ways to compress the document.
The simplest and most effective seems to have been simply to reduce the background images by 50%, this saved us 74mgs. Thats a 1/8 of the original size! That's a win!
That said, we don't want to loose too much image quality, so this is offically a rough compression, until we can dial in our numbers, and formalize a more refined pass next week.
We need to look at the document in a variet of players to see how it looks, and if any additional tweaks need to be made.
